Episode summary:​ ​This episode of GEOY explores the incredible and inspiring life of notable geologist Marie Tharp, the Mother of Ocean Floor Cartography. Geologists Mikaela Moore and Gillian Ivey discuss Tharp’s life from a young age, through her major discoveries regarding the theory of plate tectonics, obstacles and discrimination faced as a woman in science during her time, and her various accomplishments up until her recent passing in 2006.

Gillian is currently a master’s candidate in the geology program at Queen’s University. She is studying the Rhynie Chert of Scotland and its geological as well as biological significance for her master’s thesis. She is passionate about the earth and loves to share her knowledge and excitement for geology with others.   • Mikaela Moore: A member of the Traveling Geologist team and a regular host for Geologic Expeditions of Yore episodes on the Geology Podcast Network. Mikaela has a bachelor’s degree in geology and is focused primarily on carbonate geology and coral reef biodiversity. She is passionate about the earth as well as educating the public on topics in geology and oceanography and hopes to inspire a love and fascination with our natural world. Mikaela also hopes to one day be involved in informal education at one of the many places of learning across the country.
